Supervision of Theses
The Chair of Planning Theory and Urban-Regional
Policy Analysis welcomes initiatives for research oriented and
theoretically engaging Theses (Diplom, Bachelor and Master) as well as
self-initiated Thesis-Projects on innovative and planning-theory
relevant themes, such as:
- change in urban and regional politics: trends, concepts, theories
- innovation in urban and regional governance: conditions, constraints, development paths and social effects of innovations in spatial governance
- social actors and social movements in urban policy: forms, potentials and conflicts
- the social construction of space through policy and planning instruments: influence of policy and planning approaches on the perception and understanding of social space

Suggestions for Thesis Subjects
conflict in urban development and planning
The Chair of Planning Theory and Urban-Regional Policy Analysis encourages proposals for BA and MA theses on ‘conflicts in urban development and planning’ focussing on the analysis of controversies and conflicts over issues such as:
- the material and symbolic appropriation of urban spaces
- the nature and processes of decision-making in urban development
- the content and features of urban development plans, initiatives and events
- the understandings of the public and of public interest in urban policy
based on qualitative and interpretive approaches to policy analysis, protest and social mobilization research, and urban socio-spatial analysis.

the role of economic players in defining and developing the metropolitan space
In connection to a current research project concerning the role of economic players in policy approaches for the development of metropolitan space as well as the variety of definitions of metropolitan spaces in spatial development polices from an comparative international point of view, the Chair of Planning Theory and Urban-Regional Policy Analysis offers the following thesis subjects regarding policy approaches in the Berlin-Brandenburg region:
- cluster politics
- local economic Networks
- city marketing
- Zentreninitative
- business improvement districts
Core issues are the construction of the metropolitan space ‘Berlin-Brandenburg’ as well as the cooperation of the involved players from a governance-perspective.
Further information regarding the thesis themes and the research methods will be given in a consultation and throughout the thesis process.
